Families that live in a county setting with consumer services nearby are referred to us as rural . Rural families generally have services with a short trip to the city or a nearby town. Now we coined the term frontier living cause when you have to spend hours on the road to get to consumer services, you are frontier.
My wife and I are parents of 8 children with 2 still at home. How we survived was through a lot of trial and error in the beginning. Providing for a lot of children in its self is unnerving. Just imagine, we traveled one and half hours to the hospital for the delivery of our last son. The one before him was born at home in our bedroom without complications, but for me it was something to behold and surely rattled me.
I am a firefighter, so I've seen a few things and even delivered a few baby's. But when its yours, things are different. Any way back to surviving frontier life with children. Planning everything is a must! We balanced our trips to the doctors and dentist with shopping and buying in bulk and getting what we thought we might need before the next trip. I'm sure most do not travel with an ice chest to carry the perishable stuff home but we did. As the children started school, we soon learned their needs changed and soon we needed the ability to purchase more frequently and on a moments notice.
At best, we can get 2 day delivery to our post office or UPS, and as a rule don't expect delivery till the 3rd day. Internet shopping saved our bacon on a number of occasions. Ever have the kids come home and say I need to have something i.e. clothing, baseball glove, cleats. If you have children then you have experienced this one.
When we purchased, we looked for quality and bargains. We preferred to purchase outdoor clothing that is functional for the frontier life we live. As a family, we spend our free time enjoying the great outdoors year around by camping, backpacking, climbing and caving to mention a few things.
